J.R.R Tolkien's beloved series of books, The Lord of the Rings,
in the background of popular culture for nearly 50 years, has exploded
onto the world scene through the phenomenal filmed versions by New Zealand
director Peter Jackson. The first movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship
of the Ring, was released in December 2001 to tremendous critical acclaim
and box office success. The first Lord of the Rings picture made household
names of the trilogy's main cast of characters, and the actors who play
them. Hobbit Frodo Baggins, played by Elijah Woods inherits the Ring of
Power, setting in motion a series of events that will determine the fate
of middle earth. His friend the wizard Gandalf the Gray, played by Sir
Ian McKellen, immediately sends him on an eastward quest to Mordor to
return the ring to the place it was forged, Mount Doom. Assisting him
on his quest are three hobbits, Pippin, Merry, and Sam played by Billy
Boyd, Dominic Monaghan, and Sean Astin, and a ranger known as Strider
(later revealed to be Aragorn), played by Viggo Mortenson After fleeing
the dark riders of the evil lord Sauron, the four reach Rivendell, an
elf stronghold. There it is decided that Frodo will bear the ring to Mordor
with the assistance of a fellowship consisting of the three hobbits, two
men, Aragorn and Boromir, an elf, Legolas, a dwarf, Gimli. The second
movie, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, released in December of
2002, continues the story of the quest, and brings in new characters and
epic battle scenes (including one that lasts 30 minutes!). In the movie,
Saruman, played by Christopher Lee, builds an orc army designed to conquer
the world of men. His efforts are narrowly thwarted by the heroism of
the Fellowship at the battle of Helm's Deep. Far away, Sam and Frodo are
led closer to Mordor by the treacherous and two-faced Gollum, perhaps
the most affecting cgi character created to date. The billion-dollar
franchise concludes with the release of the third and final picture, The
Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in December 2003. Until then,
fans must be content with the avalanche of Rings merchandise available
